University Playground is a compact neighborhood park on the west side of Seattle's University District, a few blocks from the UW campus. It has two tennis courts and — unusually for Seattle — a practice hitting wall, which makes it a quietly valuable spot for students and solo players.

The Courts: An In-Depth Look

Two outdoor hard courts, free and walk-up only. They are not reservable and do not appear in the city's booking system, so there's no way to hold one in advance.

The hitting wall is the differentiator. Seattle has very few public practice walls, and this is one of the closest to the University of Washington — which matters if you're a student without a car, without a regular hitting partner, or working around a class schedule that doesn't line up with anyone else's.

There are no lights, so the season and the sunset set your hours.

The Playing Experience: Atmosphere & Availability

This is a neighborhood park, not a destination facility, and it's smaller and lower-key than nearby Ravenna. Demand follows the academic calendar as much as the weather: busier when school is in session, noticeably quieter in the summer and over breaks.

With only two courts, a weekend afternoon can mean a wait. Midweek mornings are usually wide open.

Strategic Corner: Gaining Your Edge at University Playground

The wall is the reason to build a routine around this court. Wall work compresses a lot of repetitions into a short session and punishes slow preparation, which makes it the most efficient solo practice available anywhere in the public system. If you live in the U District, a standing twenty-minute wall session is more valuable to your game than an occasional full match across town.

On court, the park is flat and fairly open, so wind is a mild factor but nothing like the exposed lakefront courts at Magnuson.

The park sits at 9th Ave NE and NE 50th St, an easy walk or short bus ride from the UW campus and the Ave. Parking is residential street parking. The park has a playground and open lawn alongside the courts.

The Neighborhood: Beyond the Baseline in the U District

The University District is dense, young, and packed with inexpensive food — University Way NE ("the Ave") is a few blocks east and has some of the best cheap eating in Seattle. The UW campus, the Burke-Gilman Trail, and University Village are all close by.

Planning Your Visit

These are walk-up courts, so there's nothing to reserve and nothing to check on a booking grid. If both courts are busy, the wall is available, and Ravenna Park's courts and wall are a short trip north. For a guaranteed time slot, use the daily court list to find reservable facilities.
